Six Critical Steps to get a Beautiful Weed-Free Lawn

weed free lawnIf you want to maintain a nice lawn, you’ve got to keep the weeds out. They can be aggressive and destructive, so it’s best to get on top of them before they take over your yard. Let’s get out there! Here are six critical steps for maintaining a weed-free yard.

1. Remove Existing Weeds

It’s a tough job, but it’s the only place to start. You can’t prevent new weeds until you get the old ones out of there. You can do it by hand or with a hoe, or take a look at the three Fertilizing and Weed Control Packages we offer to get your lawn back under control.

2. Dethatch

This is the process of removing the accumulation of debris that gathers between each blade of grass. You’ll need a dethatching rake, or call us and ask for our power raking service.

3. Aerate

After you determine that the lawn needs aerating, you’ll need to rent a core aerator and go over the lawn, or we can aerate for you.

4. Apply Grass Seed

Make sure your lawn grows in lush and full by spreading grass seed to even it out and cover any bare patches. You’ll want to ensure an even application, which we can do with our mechanical slit seeder.

5. Mow the Grass

Not too short! Grass that is too short has a harder time resisting weeds. And make sure those mower blades are sharp! A clean cut helps prevent plant disease and insect issues. We keep all our equipment sharpened and ready to go to deliver the best possible care for your lawn.

Keep in mind that regular mowing is key to your lawn’s health. Grass is a plant, and like any other plant it will experience stress if you cut too much at once, which is why we offer consistent weekly visits to mow your lawn.

6. Water and Feed Your Grass

You should water your lawn evenly during the cooler times of the day, preferably in the morning. We can install a sprinkler system for you, complete with a timer and a rain sensor, to ensure you don’t over- or under-water your grass.
